Interpretation

Negative: HIV-1 and HIV-2 antibodies were not confirmed. HIV-1 RNA testing on a separately collected specimen is required as soon as possible. Testing on this patient is incomplete. HIV-2 infection is endemic in West Africa. Although HIV-2 has had only limited spread outside this area, it should be considered in persons of West African origin or in those who have had sexual contact or shared needles with persons of West African origin. Follow-up testing for HIV-2 antibodies and RNA should be performed only if clinically indicated.

HIV-1 Positive:  Positive for HIV-1 antibodies. Laboratory evidence consistent with established HIV-1 infection is present.

HIV-1 Indeterminate: HIV-1 antibodies were not confirmed and HIV-1 RNA testing on a separately collected specimen is required as soon as possible. Testing on this patient is incomplete.

HIV Indeterminate: HIV-1 antibodies were not confirmed and HIV-1 RNA testing on a separately collected specimen is required as soon as possible. Testing of this patient is incomplete. Antibodies reactive against HIV-2 also detected. Although this typically represents cross-reactivity from HIV-1 antibodies, the remote possibility of HIV-2 coinfection cannot be excluded.

HIV Positive Untypable (undifferentiated): Antibodies to HIV-1 and HIV-2 confirmed in the sample. This may occur in an HIV-2 positive sample with significant cross-reactivity to HIV-1, or may be due to co-infection with both HIV-1 and HIV-2 (rare). HIV-1 and HIV-2 RNA testing on a separately collected specimen is required as soon as possible. Testing of this patient is incomplete.

All HIV-2 positive results will be automatically confirmed with an HIV-2 viral load prior to being reported by the laboratory.
