Storage and Transport

Specimens may be stored at 2 – 8° C for a maximum of 14 days prior to testing. Specimens in which testing will be delayed beyond 14 days should be frozen.

Interpretation

Positive results indicate exposure to HIV-1 and/or HIV-2 virus. All positive specimens must be tested by a second more specific supplemental. Testing of a second freshly drawn specimen on patient’’s initially diagnosed with HIV is also highly recommended.

Negative results do not exclude the possibility of infection with or exposure to HIV. Patient’’s may be in the window period which occurs after initial infection and prior to seroconversion.

Causes for Rejection

Improper tube; improper labeling; insufficient quantity. Heat-inactivated specimens will not be used in this assay.
