Interpretative Information

Transudate pleural fluid pH is generally 7.40 to 7.55. Exudate pleural fluid pH is generally 7.30 to 7.45. For pleural fluids with a pH of <7.30, consider empyema, malignancy, or rheumatoid pleurisy. Clinical correlation is required.

This pH result was determined by direct potentiometry using an Abbott i-STAT system approved for blood gas measurement. This test was developed and its performance characteristics were determined and validated by AUMC Pathology Services. It has not been cleared or approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for pleural fluid testing. This test is used for clinical purposes and should not be regarded as investigation or for research.
