Gray Top Urine Tube (Boric acid, sodium formate and sodium borate preservative); 4 mL urine
Storage and Transport
Ambient temperature and transport to Microbiology Laboratory within one hour.
Causes for Rejection
Use of non sterile container; delay in transport; improper labeling; leaking container; insufficient quantity; urine from catheter bag or tubing.
Reference Range
For non-cath urines, no growth at detection level greater than or equal to 1,000 cfu/mL.
For cath urines, no growth at detection level greater than or equal to 100 cfu/mL.
Test Consists
Semi-quantitative urine bacterial culture; no Gram stain performed.
Turn Around Time
Final negative report in 48-72 hours.
