Interpretation

In adults, 84% of individuals with levels <25 kU/L had non-atopic disease with 78% of individuals with levels >100 kU/L had atopic disease. This is based upon a study of 412 adults with respiratory symptoms.

In childre, 2 independent studies of healthy children identified that total IgE levels increase during childhood and peak at 10 years of age (geometric mean of 22 kU/L) and then gradually decline to adult values.

IgE levels below level of detection are present in <2% of persons and are rarely clinically significant. IgE levels above the normal range can be associated with many conditions, the most common conditions include asthma, atopic dermatitis (eczema), and systemic parasitic infection.
