Interpretation
This test detects treponemal antibodies, both IgM and IgG. The detection of these antibodies may indicate recent, past, or successfully treated syphilis. This test cannot distinguish betwwen active and treated infection and cannot be used to determine response to therapy.
All reactive results for this test will automatically reflex to an RPR and RPR titer. A reactive Syphilis Screen test and a reactive RPR is indicative of active or recent syphilis infection. Use RPR titers to determine response to therapy.
Patients who are reactive for this Syphils Screen and nonreactive for an RPR will be sent out for a TP-PA, a treponemal antibody test by a different methodology, to confirm the initial Syphilis Screen results.
