Specimen Requirements

Stool placed in sterile container with transport within 1 hour of passage. Rectal swab with evidence of stool from patient unable to pass/collect specimen.

Storage and Transport

Ambient temperature and transport to Microbiology Laboratory within 1 hour of passage.

Causes for Rejection

Use of non sterile container; delay in transport; improper labeling; patients in hospital > 3 days

Reference Range

No Salmonella, Shigella, Campylobacter jejuni, Pleisiomonas, Aeromonas, Edwardsiella or Shiga-like Toxin isolated.

Critical Values

Salmonella, Shigella, Campylobacter jejuni or positive Shiga-like Toxin.

Test Consists

Culture for Salmonella, Shigella, Campylobacter jejuni, Edwardsiella, Pleisiomonas, and Aeromonas. Shiga-like Toxin screen by EIA will be added as a reflex test. No Gram stain performed. For E. coli O157, Vibrio, Yersinia, see separate orderables.
