Specimen Type

For in house AFB smear: Sputum; bronchioalveolar lavage; bronchial brushing

All other specimen types will be sent to reference lab for smear and culture. Smear results will be available within 24 hours after receipt by reference lab. 

Specimen Requirements

Sputum early morning deep cough to produce lower respiratory specimen

Storage and Transport

Maintain at room temperature and transport to Microbiology Laboratory within one hour.

Causes for Rejection

Use of nonsterile container; Delay in transport; Improper labeling; Insufficient volume

Reference Range

No acid fast organisms present.

Critical Values

smears positive for acid fast organisms.

Test Consists

Mycobacterial [AFB] smear only; no culture performed.

Turn Around Time

Result available within 24 hours.

Methodology

Fluorochrome acid fast stain. If positive, a Kinyoun stain is performed to confirm.
