Interpretative Information

The Rupture of [fetal] Membranes Test (ROM+) qualitatively detects the presence of IGFBP-1 and AFP protein markers of amniotic fluid in vaginal secretions. Since elevated AFP levels can be associated with various fetal developmental disorders such as neural-tube defects, hypothyroidism, autoimmune state, congenital heart defects, and cystic fibrosis, positive results should be clinically correlated with signs, symptoms or complaints suggestive of rupture of membranes.
