Catalog ID Paralysis Periodic Paralysis Genetic Testing (sponsored free testing)
Eligibility
Patients must be 18 years of age or older and have:
A) Episodic muscle weakness/paralysis attacks or episodic pain after attacks (more than one occurrence)
-AND-
B) Episodes are provoked by at least one of the common triggers for hyperkalemic or hypokalemic primary periodic paralysis.
Common triggers include:
- Cold environment
- Rest after exercise
- Stress or fatigue
- Alcohol and certain foods/beverages
- Potassium-rich food
- Hunger/fasting
- Changes in activity level
- Changes in humidity
- Extra sleep
- Pregnancy and menstruation
- Illness of any type
- Some medications
- Potassium supplements
- Carbohydrate-rich evening meals
- Periods of inactivity, including nocturnal rest
- Heavy meals
- Sweets
- Salt
- Cold
- Stress
Specimen Requirements
3 mL Lavender EDTA blood or Invitae buccal swab kit
Request specimen collection kit from the Specimen Referral Laboratory at 706-721-4868 or send the patient to the 2nd floor MOB Laboratory.
Fill out the requisition that is under the "Resources" section on the left side of this screen. It must have a physician's signature. Submit the requisition form with the completed kit or have the patient present it to the laboratory for draw.
