Storage and Transport

Samples may be stored at 2 to 8° C for up to 72 hours. Specimens in which testing will be delayed longer than 72 hours should be stored frozen at -15° C or lower, avoid multiple freeze thaw cycles.

40 – 240 mg/dL

Interpretation

Decreased levels of haptoglobin are seen in response to hemolysis. Transfusions which contain a small fraction of hemolyzed red blood cells can lower the level. Increased levels occur with acute or chronic inflammatory response, tissue destruction, and malignant neoplasms.

Causes for Rejection

Incorrect specimen; improper labeling; gross hemolysis or lipemia; insufficient quantity; wrong tube
