Storage and Transport

Specimens may be stored at 2 – 8° C for up to 48 hours prior to testing. Specimens in which testing will be delayed for longer than 48 hours should be frozen at minus 15° C or colder.

Reference Values

Nonreactive

Interpretation

Hepatitis B surface antigen will be detected during periods of active replication of the Hepatitis B virus. This can occur in acute infection, chronic carrier state, or chronic active hepatitis. The chronic carrier state is indicated by the persistence of HBsAg and/or HBeAg over long periods (6 months to years) without seroconversion to the corresponding antibodies. All positive HBsAg specimens will be tested by a neutralization assay to confirm that the positive HBsAg result is a true positive.

Causes for Rejection

Improper labeling; insufficient quantity; use of heparinized tube. Heat treated specimens may not be used.

Turn Around Time

12 hours from time of testing
