Interpretation

Hepatitis B surface antibody can initially be detected several weeks to several months after HBsAg is no longer found, and it may persist for many years after acute infection has been resolved. A positive antibody result following immunization indicates effective immunization. Some individuals who have demonstrated adequate response to vaccination via the presence of hepatitis B surface antibody may become hepatitis B surface antibody negative. The significance of this loss of hepatitis B surface antibody is not currently clear. Immunization booster shots may be justified in these individuals.
