5 mL gold top SST tube; 2 mL blood

Storage and Transport

Store samples at 2-8° C if not tested within 12 hours of collection. Specimens which are in the primary collection tube may be stored at 2-8° C up to 24 hours. Serum which is removed from the cells may be stored in an aliquot tube at 2-8° C for up to 24 hours, or frozen at -20° C for up to 365 days.

Interpretation

The HAV Total Antibody assay does not distinguish between IgG and IgM antibody, and therefore, cannot distinguish between an acute infection or exposure to HAV at sometime in the past. The sample should be tested with a specific HAV IgM assay to determine if the HAV Total Antibody assay is positive because of IgG or IgM antibody.

Causes for Rejection

Incorrect container, gross hemolysis, gross lipemia, improper labeling; insufficient quantity.

Special Instructions

In patients receiving therapy with high doses of biotin (> 5 mg/day) no sample should be taken until at least 8 hours after the last biotin administration.
