Specimen Requirements

Collect specimen as early as possible in the course of illness.

Storage and Transport

Transport blood, bone marrow, CSF, and tissues at ambient temperature. Transport respiratory specimens, swabs, and small tissues in M4-RT transport media (available in Microbiology lab), and urine on wet ice or refrigerate if transport is delayed.

Causes for Rejection

Insufficient quantity; improper labeling; improper collection; improper or delayed transport

Reference Range

No virus isolated.

Critical Values

Results called to the physician or unit upon request.

Test Consists

Cell culture isolation of the following viruses: Adenovirus, cytomegalovirus, some Coxsackie viruses, ECHO viruses, enteroviruses, Herpes simplex virus, and varicella zoster virus.
