Storage and Transport
Collection materials are provided by the Microbiology Laboratory. Do not substitute collection materials. M4-RT media should be immediately transported to the laboratory on wet ice.
Causes for Rejection
Wooden shaft swabs. Swabs not in M4-RT media. Use of other transport media. Specimens not properly labeled. Delay in transit.
Reference Range
No Herpes simplex isolated.
Critical Values
Positive results are reported to the county and state health departments. (Results called to the physician or unit upon request.)
Interpretation
A positive result indicates the presence of HSV in the specimen.
Test Consists
Cell culture isolation of Herpes simplex virus.
Turn Around Time
1 to 2 days from time culture is initiated.
