Specimen Type

Aspirates, body fluids, tissue, sputum, skin.

Specimen Requirements

Do not allow aspirates, fluids and tissue to dry out. Swabs are UNACCEPTABLE.

Storage and Transport

Transport at ambient temperature to Microbiology Laboratory within 1 hour.

Causes for Rejection

Non-sterile container; improper labeling; delay in transport; insufficient quantity; leaking specimen; swab specimen

Reference Range

No fungus isolated after 4 or 6 weeks [specimen dependent].

Critical Values

Isolation of Histoplasma capsulatum, Blastomyces dermatitidis, Coccidioides immitis and Cryptococcus neoformans/gattii.

Test Consists

Fungal culture only.

Turn Around Time

Final negative report in 4-6 weeks.
