Specimen Requirements

Place swab or fluid in universal transport medium such as M4, M4RT, M5, M6, or UTM.

Storage and Transport

Specimens should be immediately transported to the Microbiology laboratory.

Ambient: 1 hr

Refrigerated: 48 hrs

Frozen at -20C: Unacceptable

Frozen at -70C: 1 month

Causes for Rejection

Wooden shaft swabs; calcium alginate swabs; improper labeling; delay in transport > 1 hour; urine; transport media other than those specified.

Reference Range

No Chlamydia trachomatis isolated

Critical Values

Positive results are reported to the state and county health departments. 

Interpretation

A positive result indicates the presence of viable Chlamydia trachomatis in the specimen.
