Storage and Transport

If the assay will be performed within 4 days after collection, the specimen should be stored at 2 – 8° C. If the testing will be delayed more than 4 days, the specimen should be stored frozen. Avoid repeated freezing and thawing.

Causes for Rejection

Improper labeling; heat-treated serum; lipemia; gross hemolysis; serum with obvious microbial contamination; wrong tube; insufficient quantity

Reference Range

Negative indicates no recent exposure.

Positive indicates recent exposure, reactivation, or reinfection.

Interpretation

CMV IgM antibody is the first antibody to develop in response to primary CMV infection. CMV IgM may also be detected during reinfection and in many instances of severe reactivation. CMV isolation via viral culture or other antigen detection methods is still the best method to confirm infection.
