Storage and Transport

Separated serum may be stored at 2 – 8° C for up to 5 days. If longer storage is required, specimens should be frozen at -20° C (but only once); avoid repeated freezing and thawing.

Causes for Rejection

Improper labeling; heat-treated serum; lipemia; gross hemolysis; serum with microbial contamination

Reference Range

Negative: No previous exposure

Positive: Exposure at some undetermined time in the past

Interpretation

Patients determined to be ’’Negative’’ for CMV IgG antibody are considered susceptible to primary CMV infection.

 

Patients determined to be ’’Positive’’ for CMV IgG antibody are considered to have had CMV infection in the past or are currently infected. Such individuals are potentially at risk of transmitting CMV infection but are not necessarily currently contagious.
