Causes for Rejection

Specimen mislabeled; Specimen not maintained on ice; Specimen contains >25% volume of air; Specimen clotted;  Needle not removed.

Special Instructions

Patient should be supine and relaxed. Specimen should be drawn 20 minutes following any change in respiratory status to allow for equilibration of blood gases. After specimen collection, pressure should be applied to the site for 5 minutes or until the bleeding has stopped.

Test Consists

Measured pH, pC02, p02; Calculated 02 saturation, HC03, base excess, and total C02.

Indications

Evaluate respiratory function, acid-base balance, and lung function.

Limitations

Values can be affected by gross hemolysis and gross lipemia. Calculations assume body temperature of 37°C.
